The WMF is a small pedestal table: a charred wood base supports a round table top in polished bronze. The base is made up by two carved chestnut wood pieces joined by a small bronze disc that is likely to rust by the presence of air moisture. The light reflects off the table's polished surface hinting at ancient Chinese and European bronze mirrors (produced long before the discovery of glass). On the other hand, the use of charred wood draws from Yakisugi, a pre-modern Japanese technique to seal wood. The wood grain stands out in a dark black finish in sharp contrast to the metallic luster of polished bronze. Hence the WMF table aims at bringing together different historical times, the outcome of a modernist interpretation of timeless materials.
